Whether intentional or subliminal, landscape painting carries an environmental message and what seems relevant to me today are places or natural systems that suggest dramatic imminent change. In the mountains, I find distinctive dramatic architectural spaces carved by prehistoric glacial activity characterized as steep cliffed cirques, u-shaped valleys, ampitheaters, hanging valleys, knife edge arêtes, and moraines -- viewed in an atmosphere of constant disappearing and reappearing. On visiting a glacial mountain landscape, there appears a reaction of stillness and quiet in the midst of extraordinary energy and movement.
