I come to Maine to paint the sea. At Popham, I am captivated by the luminous tidelines, Seguin island emerging from the fog, the shifting tideflats at the State Park, the rock at Morse’s River, the saltmarshes, the sugarloafs on the Kennebec, the stinky rocky tide pools of Fox and Wood Island, and the hidden coves of Phippsburg and Small Point. I watch the annual erosion, relentless surf, everchanging tides, powerful thunderstorms, glowing rainbows, rising moon, bright stars, and evening bonfires with respect and awe. I am inspired by the significance of these historic coastal waterways and their inland connections from the Kennebec to Casco Bay.
