Meandering meltwaters cascade and fall.  Each drawing is its own particular journey of following the intricate paths that water takes as it plunges through a glacial gorge or down a rocky terrain.  Interconnected soft passages and restless marks eventually take form from the hidden and often complex structures underneath.  These landscapes of light, air, and water are unsettled by their allusion to climate change, but are intended to convey a calming and energizing renewal.

Shoreline/Coastline

“In the world there is nothing softer and more yielding than water.  Yet, when it attacks things hard and resistant, there is not one of them that can prevail.”  Lao-Tzu (6^th C BC)

On an incoming tide, there is a moment when water and land float in equilibrium.  Land hovers over water in dissolving fingers of currents until they are gone.  Ultimately, water is transformed by sky in an ever-changing floating environment.  This systemic network of channels weaves a timeless pattern of vast elemental space.

The dialogue between sky, water, and land is generated in circulating pathways in tide flats at the mouth of a river, rocky tidal coves, and submerging seaweed.  My response is this series of paintings made of interconnected marks, blended light, and color passages to invite contemplation and exploration beyond the surface.

Tidal bodies are dynamic natural forces that symbolize the ongoing change in our environment.  As an artist and architect living on the ocean, I have a visceral response to barrier beaches, coastal storms, and changing coastlines.  I pause to think of the current erosion cycle we are facing on the New England coast with deep respect.  For now, the land simply disappears, then reappears when the tide turns or the storm subsides.

I invite the viewer to enjoy these watery worlds, and ponder on the forces that shape them.

Through early February 2013, I am enjoying a unique opportunity to work with George Nick, a renowned painter and lifelong teacher of painters.  In "13 Lessons for Painting", Nick synthesizes his knowledge and experience in a theoretical, practical, and creative masterclass.  It is a practicum in oil painting from observation for experienced painters and teachers who wish to revisit key issues of value, color, paint handling and composition and partake in the tradition of Chase, Hawthorne, and Dickinson. A culminating work of his professorial career, this course distills the problems explored by Nick in the past 50 years of his teaching career into one single class in his studio.

"Despite the limitation of living in a three-dimensional world, paintings can still be made which reconstruct an expressive parallel reality that hold more than a ring of truth to them."

TURNING DOLLARS INTO PRINTS, PATTERNS AND POTS

Massachusetts Cultural Council Recognizes Maud Morgan Arts as a Leader in Arts Education 

Terry DeLancey, the Executive Director of  the Agassiz Baldwin Community (ABC),  recently received some good news. The  Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) has  awarded DeLancey's agency $2,500 in the Peers Category of the Cultural Investment Portfolio to support the work of Maud Morgan Arts, a program of ABC.

Since state grants are awarded through a competitive process, this award signifies that ABC provides a high level of service to community members through its programs. According to the award letter, "MCC staff and panelists were impressed by the innovative work [ABC is] doing to increase public value for the citizens of Massachusetts." DeLancey calls this award "an honor."

"All the faculty at Maud Morgan Arts are artists in their own right," says DeLancey. "The students receive a first-rate arts experience with extended classes in studios that are specific for the medium. This grant gives us the opportunity to serve more students."

 The MCC's mission is to promote  excellence, education, access and diversity  in the arts, humanities and sciences in  order to improve the quality of life for all  Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities. The MCC has a budget of $11.2 million, including an appropriation of $9.5 million from the state of Massachusetts and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and other sources. Its funds reach every community in Massachusetts. The not-for-profit cultural industry has a $4.2 billion economic impact in the state.
